Biography
Ray Fabi is a Canadian composer whose television and film work is broadcasted world-wide. He has won 19 Socan Awards, the most SOCAN awards for film and TV. Beyond his nominations for Gemini awards, he was also nominated for an Emmy in 2002 in the musical composition category for his work on Arthur. Ray is recognized for the versatility and finesse of his compositions, many of them created for series such as Arthur, Are You Afraid of the Dark and Xcalibur, which have acquired international success.
Born into a musical family, Ray started exploring music with accordion, guitar, organ, and finally, the piano. Early on, he was strongly interested in composition. As a teen, he founded a progressive rock group with which he toured throughout Quebec. In 1986 he was hired as keyboardist for Celine Dion’s hit album Incognito and also worked on recordings for Martine St-Clair and Robert Charlebois. In 1987, Ray composed to picture for his first national advertising campaigns.
In the early ‘90s, Ray was chosen by L.A. director D.J. McHale to write the music for an upcoming series: Are You Afraid of The Dark? The series became a cult hit in the US and remained in production for 10 years. In 1994, Ray composed his first scores for feature-length films. In 1996, he was hired to compose the music for Emmy winning-series Arthur, which is still in production. During this time, Ray was also commissioned to write Canada’s theme song for the winter Olympics in Nagano and, in 2000, French producers Philippe Druillet, Amelie Aubert and Robert Rea called upon his talents to create the music for the 40 episodes of Xcalibur. Fabi proposes musical creativity based on “hearing the image”. Ray pays special attention to details, and translates smoothly the nuances of characters’ emotions with precision and compositional fluidity.
Equally comfortable with orchestras, synthesizers, or bands, Ray’s approach, passion and open-mindedness towards music allows him to grasp the essence and emotion of the story, adapting himself to a project to create the desired score.

Récipiendaire de 19 Prix de la Socan pour le film et la télévision, et mis en nomination pour un Emmy et de Geminis, il est reconnu pour la polyvalence de ses créations, certaines ayant connues un succès international telles que dans les séries Arthur, Are You Afraid of the Dark ?, et Xcalibur.
Issu d’une famille musicale, il explore l’accordéon, la guitare, l’orgue, et finalement le piano. Dès son jeune âge, il est intéressé par la composition. À l’adolescence, il forme un groupe de rock-progressif avec lequel il effectue une tournée dans plusieurs villes du Québec. En 1986, il est claviériste sur l’album succès Incognito de Céline Dion et participe aussi aux projets musicaux de Martine St-Clair et Robert Charlebois. En 1987, Raymond compose ses premières musiques à l’image pour des campagnes publicitaires nationales.
Au début des années ’90, Ray est repéré par le réalisateur de Los Angeles, D.J. McHale pour composer la musique d’une série qu’il prépare : Are You Afraid of The Dark? Celle-ci connaîtra un succès instantané et cette série culte sera en production pendant 10 ans. Ray compose ses premières musiques pour long-métrages en 1994, puis décroche en 1996 le contrat de composition pour la populaire série Arthur qui est toujours en production et qui détient quatre prix Emmy. C’est aussi pendant cette période qu’on lui commande la chanson thème du Canada pour les Jeux Olympiques d’hiver à Nagano. En 2000, les producteurs français Philippe Druillet, Amélie Aubert et Robert Réa se tournent vers Fabi pour créer la musique des quarante épisodes de la série Xcalibur.
Autant à l’aise avec orchestre, synthétiseurs, ou band, son approche de la musique, sa passion pour celle-ci et son ouverture lui permettent de saisir l’essence des images pour s’adapter aux projets et créer le score désiré.
